Enjoying the sun?
Many of us enjoy being in the sun and often feel more positive and happier when the sun shines, but the ultraviolet rays given off by the sun can be extremely harmful to our bodies and can have a pivotal effect in conditions such as premature skin ageing, skin cancers, and eye damage. They also suppress the immune system, reducing your ability to fight off these and other conditions.

Beautiful tanned skin?
People often associate having a suntan with looking beautiful but the golden glow is actually the effect of sun damage to the top layer of your skin. The cumulative effect of sun damage can lead to the early onset on wrinkles, age spots and uneven skin tone – not so beautiful after all!

Sunburn (second degree burns)
Second degree burns caused by the sun’s UVB rays damage the skin’s deeper layers and nerve endings. Usually redness, swelling and blisters can form which are a source of moisture and protection for the skin. This type of sun burn is usually very painful and takes a lot longer to heal. Ouch!

Wrinkles
The sun’s UVA rays can prematurely age the skin making it look old and wrinkly before its time. The majority of the signs of skin ageing in adults are the result of teenage suntans they had before the age of 18. Exposure to the sun generates free radicals in the skin which damage the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres. Over time, the cumulative effects of free radical damage caused by UVA rays include the breakdown of the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres causing skin to sag, stretch and wrinkles to appear.

Freckles
Freckles usually appear on parts of the body exposed to the sun. They become more apparent in the summer especially on people with fair skin and those with blonde or red hair. Freckles are not dangerous; they are just flat, pigmented spots on the skin.

Age spots
Age spots are not caused by ageing, they are caused by sun exposure although they do multiply as you get older. They tend to appear on areas that see a lot of sunlight such as hands, face and chest but are completely harmless.
