‘Macho’ Men Fail on Sun Care as Younger Generations Ignore Warnings

24th July 2012

Research conducted on our behalf has revealed that messages surrounding sun care and the risks of skin cancer are being lost amongst the young. The poll of 1,000 UK adults showed that more than one fifth (21 per cent) of 18 – 24-year-olds believed it was never important to wear sun cream in the UK, contrasting with just 5 per cent of 35 – 44-year-olds, who appeared to be the best educated.

Nearly one half (44 per cent) of men confessed to getting sun burn at a sporting event or music festival in the UK, compared to just one third of women. Similarly, twice as many men than women thought you never needed to wear sun cream in the UK (15 per cent as opposed to seven per cent). 20 per cent of men also thought you could spend at least an hour in the sun in the UK without applying sun cream, but half that amount (11 per cent) of women felt the same, showing far more men than women are not acting on sun care advice and are increasing their risk of skin cancer considerably as a result.

As a result of our findings we have launched our new Solaveil Suncare app which alerts users when to re-apply sunscreen or seek shade and has received media coverage across the globe.

19th June 2012

We love the Sun Safe Schools (SSS) campaign by skin charity Skcin. So much so that we've donated sun hats to two primary schools in Cheshire, UK!

The SSS campaign aims to guide schools on how to keep our children safe in the sun. By donating these sun hats, Solaveil Physical Shield is helping to ensure that primary school children are adequately protected against harmful UV rays.

New Rules for Sunscreen Labelling in USA

A new ruling by Food & Drug Administration (FDA) will provide consumers in USA with clearer guidance about UV protection.  From 18th June 2012, only sunscreens that have a SPF 15 or higher will be able to claim that they help prevent sunburn and reduce the risks of skin cancer and early skin ageing.  Also from this date, only sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB rays will be able to claim 'broad spectrum' on pack.  The new rules align with the European Commission Recommendation of 2006.

The FDA ruling favours a simpler classification system for measuring UVA protection which is similar to the UVA label claim currently used in Europe.  A previously proposed star rating system has been dropped.

The agency also takes a strong positive stance on inorganic sunscreens that reassures the safety of nanoparticle UV filters and confirms the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide do not penetrate the skin.

Prevention is Better than Cure

Two new drugs, found to prolong the life of patients with advanced skin cancer, were revealed at a conference in Chicago, USA in June. In a trial, 84% of patients that took Vemurafenib twice a day were still alive six months later compared to only 64% of chemotherapy patients. The drug also prevents the disease from worsening by 74% compared with chemotherapy.

Another study showed that a one-course infusion treatment of another drug, Ipilimumab, may give patients with advanced melanoma extra years of life.

Figures show malignant melanoma takes the lives of more than 2,000 people in the UK each year, and more than 11,000 people annually develop the disease. Wearing sunscreen products significantly reduces your risk of getting skin cancer so ensure you are properly protected when the sun shines. Remember prevention is better than cure!
